Watercolor Masterclass Series: Portraiture

10 Sessions | Beginner-Friendly to Intermediate Watercolor Workshop with Sir Jen

This workshop’s aim is not to just teach our participating students in learning on how to paint portraits in watercolor, but also to achieve a deep understanding of the underlying structure of the human head which leads to the very foundation of drawing and painting portraiture.

While most would perceive that the inclusion of the anatomical structure is too academic to be inserted  in this short course, the instructor believes that this step is essential to strategically map out the “landmarks of the human face,—- from the skeletal processes  and protuberances, to tiny muscular stretches and squashes that mark the facial and emotional expressions.

In the end, everyone involved in this short course would come to the realization that portrait painting is not just staining the paper to illustrate the likeness of the subject, but to capture and project the subjects’ emotions and personality.

And to fill out the void that most short-termed portrait workshops left undue, it is important that the anatomical study be infused in the whole run of the workshop

About the Class

Session 1:

This introductory part of the workshop shall be focused on the anatomical structure of the human head, including the clavicular and shoulder areas. Thus, the first three hours will be focused on the skeletal structure and how to layer it out proportionally.

Session 2:

Musculature. It is imperative to understand the muscular nomenclature of the head to effectively visually portray the faces depths and pitches which is important in the tonal rendition of a portrait painting.

Session 3:

Pencil and watercolor tonal study of the head in different lighting situations. It includes planar study (Asaro Model).

Sessions 4, 5 and 6:

Physiognomy. These sessions involve painting every feature of the face part-by-part, starting from the eyes, nose and the maxillary area, mouth, eras, etc.

Sessions 7:

Portrait painting from a still references in different approaches.
