Auspicious Kinzoku

This composition using galvanized wire mesh to represent Kinzoku (Japanese word for Metal), theme of the Ikebana Sogetsu exhibit depicts the celebration of resiliency, strength and durability as contributing factors to man’s longevity.

The purpose of using dried materials is to give the Ikebana composition a longer lasting display life than using fresh materials while maintaining their beautiful natural design; another nod to longevity.

The auspicious red and gold colors focuses on the momentous significance of the journey to longevity.

The massive use of Milflores’ red-colored element symbolizes good fortune and strength while the gold-colored elements symbolizes the sun, God’s power & mercy. Together, red and gold symbolize prosperity and happiness.

Neny is among the first members of Sunshine Place taking Writing, Porcelain Painting & Ikebana classes. She has published some of her essays, memoirs & short stories in three books published in Sunshine Place, “Finding the Sun”, “Reflections in Light and Shadows” and “Bridges of Memory.” She has likewise participated in exhibits of Ikebana Sogetsu Manila.

Like my husband say I am a woman of leisure.  A wife, mother  of three and a grandmother of 5.

Hi, I’m Laly Etroit, a widow, mother of 3 girls and Wowa to 2 little girls.

I joined Sunshine Place to study Ikebana with Marc Tomas and after 3 years I have fallen in love with the Japanese art of flower arranging. Sogetsu fits me very well because it can be done anytime, anywhere and with anything. It was also a wonderful way to make several new friends who also love the art!!

Never dormant nor idle, I find art in almost everything. The possibilities are endless: discarded pieces of wood, metal scraps, dried leaves, tree bark, twigs, bottles, broken jars, anything. To be able to transform what’s been thrown away, into something artistically beautiful, is a true blessing.

Linda Atayde is Executive Director for education programs of SM Foundation. She completed Master in Management at Asia Pacific College.  She has been a habitue of Sunshine Place since it opened, in tutorial classes in French, Spanish , Writing Classes, Ikebana sessions, and other fitness sessions.

Sogetsu is liberating! I love the process of bringing order to what might seem like a collection of plant & unconventional materials , to create a harmonious and satisfying expression of my art.

Sogetsu Ikebana is bringing out the artist within me which has been there for 72 years. Awakening my senses to Ikebana has made me more aware of the beauty of trees ( alive or drying-up), of recyclable materials which are already due to trash cans and junk shop.

Left brain ran the show – until ikebana staged a coup.
